On November 25, the Shenzhen Technology Transfer Promotion Association visited City University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute as part of its president-led research visits. The delegation included President Peng Honglin; Vice Presidents Chen Qidong, Liu Hongxia, Zhang Qilong and Ding Guoxin; Supervisor-General Mu Weifeng; Standing Council Member Zhong Chunjiang; Zhang Junxiang of Shenzhen-Hong Kong (Shenzhen) Venture Capital; Feng Chongqin of Shenzhen Yuanshan Private Equity; Dandan Fei, Executive Secretary-General and Chief Legal Counsel of the association and partner at Guantao Law Firm; and Executive Secretary-General Jiang Fang. Chen Junduo, Standing Council Member of the association and Executive Vice President of CityU Shenzhen Research Institute, received the delegation.
Liu Jianbin, Director of the Proof-of-Concept Center of CityU Shenzhen Research Institute, introduced CityU's mainland research and innovation network, including the Shenzhen Research Institute, Chengdu Research Institute, City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan), and the Institute of Matter Science in the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone. He also introduced the Shenzhen Research Institute's role as the first Hong Kong university to build an industry-academia-research building in Shenzhen, one of the first new-type R&D institutions recognized by the Guangdong Department of Science and Technology, and the first Shenzhen proof-of-concept center established by a Hong Kong university.
Chen Junduo said CityU's mainland research institutes each have their own focus. They connect with the university's innovation and entrepreneurship system, build enterprise collaboration platforms, match corporate needs, promote technology transfer and industry-academia-research cooperation, and integrate innovation education into CityU's talent-development system. He also spoke about CityU's engineering strength, international orientation and willingness to work with member institutions through the association.
Peng Honglin said the association's role is to connect universities, companies and investors, then turn those connections into services companies can use. He suggested that member universities explore jointly built proof-of-concept centers. If the model works, the association could help coordinate implementation, build its angel-investment capacity and move more university research toward commercial use.
On university cooperation, Chen Qidong of Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shenzhen Research Institute said PolyU and CityU, both Hong Kong universities, have each explored industrial collaboration and can learn from each other in policy and industry cooperation. Mu Weifeng of Zhejiang University Shenzhen Research Institute noted that Zhejiang University and CityU have long been neighbors in Shenzhen Virtual University Park and may cooperate in research projects, joint training and the proof-of-concept center under the state-owned-assets innovation and entrepreneurship platform. Zhong Chunjiang of Xidian University Shenzhen Research Institute also encouraged deeper collaboration between Xidian and CityU.
On university-enterprise cooperation, Liu Hongxia of Shenzhen Yuanshan Private Equity Investment Management Co., Ltd. said technology transfer from universities is difficult and mature research results should be put to use. Zhang Qilong of Shenzhen-Hong Kong (Shenzhen) Venture Capital Co., Ltd. said CityU has built a strong record for a young university and that the platform can support teachers and students through the full entrepreneurial life cycle.
Ding Guoxin, Chief Representative of Federal IP Law Firm's Shenzhen representative office, said he looks forward to helping association members with outbound business such as product or project expansion. Zhang Junxiang noted that successful technology-transfer cases remain limited and that failed attempts often offer more lessons. Feng Chongqin said capital should focus on how market-oriented investment can support technology transfer more precisely.
City University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute was founded in 2001 and funded wholly by CityU. It is an integral part of CityU's research system and the university's extension of R&D work in mainland China, with a mission to transfer CityU technologies into the mainland market. CityU was the first Hong Kong university to build an industry-academia-research building inside Shenzhen Virtual University Park's national university science park in 2005, using the base for applied research, industrial incubation and doctoral training.
